About the UCAT

The UCAT (formerly UKCAT) was established in 2006 to help universities achieve greater fairness in selection. Around 37,000 candidates sit the test each year as part of their application to courses in medicine and dentistry.

UCAT Exam

The University Clinical Aptitude Test is an entrance test accepted by a consortium of universities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand for entry into medical and dental degree programs. The exam tests a student's mental ability and his readiness to join a medical school. The UCAT is a two-hour computer-based admission test, divided into five separately timed multiple-choice tests: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Situational Judgement.

The test is an online test taken at a Pearson VUE centre and candidates are not allowed to bring external materials in to the exam. A basic calculator is provided on the screen in the quantitative reasoning and decision-making tests, along with a white board and a marker pen for taking notes. The equipment and conditions vary slightly between different test centers. There is no curriculum content, as the test is designed to probe innate skills. These include basic arithmetic, reading & writing ability, along with character and personal & social attitudes.

Booking your Test

The 2022 UCAT must be sat between 11 July and 29 September 2022. All key dates and deadlines are on the UCAT Test Cycle page (https://www.ucat.ac.uk/about-ucat/ucat-test-cycle/). It is your responsibility to book and sit your test within the test window.

Registration for the UCAT is a two-step process of registering an account and booking a test, using the Pearson VUE registration system.

Step 1

Register for a UCAT Account
REGISTER AN ACCOUNT - OPENS 24 MAY 2022 (9.30AM BST)

New candidates must register for a UCAT account before they can book a test on (https://www.ucat.ac.uk/generic-pages/ucat-registration/) . Returning candidates should use their existing account, as multiple accounts are not permitted.

It can take up to 1 business day for Pearson VUE to set up your account. Delays to account registration will not be accepted as a mitigating circumstance for missing the booking deadline.

  • Register with your legal name exactly as it appears on the photo ID you intend to present when your test. If there is not an exact match, you may be unable to test and may lose your test fee.
  • Kindly complete the registration by providing all the information required.
  • After creating your account you will receive an email from Pearson VUE containing your username for your records. You can log in to your account using the username and password you set up during registration.
  • Occasionally account details have to be validated before you can complete the account registration process. You may need to wait (up to 1 business day) for an email from Pearson VUE with additional instructions. If this email has not arrived after 24 hours (and is not in your spam folder) please contact Pearson VUE Customer Services.

Step Two - Book a Test

BOOK A TEST - OPENS 20 JUNE 2022 (6AM BST)

You should book your test through your UCAT Account.

You are strongly recommended to book a test date early in the test cycle. If you choose to book a late test date and then encounter illness or other issues which prevent you from attending your test appointment you may not be able to reschedule within the test period.

It is your responsibility to ensure your booking is made successfully in advance of the booking deadline of 22 September 2022 (12 noon BST). Claims of mitigating circumstances or technical errors affecting your ability to book by the deadline will not be accepted.

Once you have booked a test, you will be sent a confirmation email that includes important details about your appointment. Please keep this email safe.

You may only take the test once in any test window. Any instances of multiple testing in the same year will be treated as misconduct and all results withdrawn.

Test Fees 2022

The test fee is payable at the time of booking by any major debit/credit card:

Tests taken outside the UK: £115/AED530.
